  • History

Family owned & family run since 1889

McLynn’s was established in 1889 by Daniel McLynn and his wife Elizabeth “Granny“ McLynn. The building was split into a grocery shop and public house on the ground floor with Daniel and Elizabeth living above the premises with their five children.

The business was taken over by their son Alfie in 1928 who bought the building outright and ran it until April 1967 when, out of the blue one day he handed the keys to his son Daniel or Donal as he is commonly known with the phrase “it’s yours” to which the reply was “what’s mine?”.

Donal, a secondary school teacher took the bar and grocery on working two full time jobs in the process. Seeing the dying trade in the local grocery store he converted the entire premises into a bar and the old kitchen into a lounge. Donal an accomplished musician himself who played in a folk group with his sisters completely changed the image of the bar by turning it into a place known for great music where everyone was welcome.

Donal was a publican for fifty years and in October 2017 decided the time was right to retire. Nowadays the pub is run by his son Daragh.

McLynn’s Bar Sligo has heritage at every glance, a growing whiskey and gin collection along with music every weekend and mid week nights and don’t forget a big open fire in the winter time and a beer garden to enjoy in the summer time
